Developing Methodologies for Public Art Evaluation

As a requirement for graduation, Carnegie Mellon University Master of Arts Management students must complete a Systems Synthesis Project. This is a unique challenge in which teams of students solve a particular project proposed by a client.

The project was proposed by Renee Piechocki, Director of the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council’s Office of Public Art, and Liesel Fenner, Manager of Public Art at Americans for the Arts, as co-sponsors and was conducted under the guidance of an advisory board of public art administrators and professionals in related fields.

Requirements for the project include a paper documenting the methodology of the research taken.

Developing Methodologies for Public Art Evaluation details the thought processes behind the creation of an evaluation tool for public art including research, testing, key findings, and recommendations. This document can serve as a resource for those who are interested in the learning more about the academic basis for the development of the evaluation system.
